Taste of Lesotho: Make Sweet Fat Cakes at Home!

Want to bring culture to your kitchen in a way your kids will love (and eat)?
Take a bite out of Lesotho with our free recipe for Sweet Fat Cakes—a delicious treat enjoyed by children and families all over the “Kingdom in the Sky.”

Known locally as Magwinya or Liphaphatha, these fluffy, golden treats are a popular street snack in Lesotho—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and just sweet enough to make smiles all around.

With just a few ingredients, you and your child can cook, learn, and explore culture together.

🇱🇸 Why Sweet Fat Cakes?

In Lesotho, sweet fat cakes are often eaten during celebrations, school breaks, or sold fresh from roadside stands. They’re made from simple ingredients—flour, sugar, and oil—but are full of flavor and memory.

We created this recipe alongside our Cultural Ambassador, Bongiswa, who shared how she used to eat them warm with friends after school in her village.

👩🍳 What Kids Learn in the Kitchen:
