A Little Lava Fun: An Easy Volcano Craft

A Little Lava Fun: An Easy Volcano Craft

Did you know Hawaii was formed by volcanoes? These powerful mountains helped create the beautiful islands we see today. Many people honor Pele, the goddess of volcanoes and fire, who is believed to live in volcanoes like Kīlauea.

Volcanoes are part of Hawaii’s stories and traditions so let’s build your own mini volcano and watch it erupt just like the ones in Hawaii.

What You’ll Need

  • Small cup or plastic bottle
  • Playdough, clay, or sand
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Dish soap (optional for bubbly lava)
  • Red or orange food coloring

How to Make Your Volcano

1. Build Your Island

Place your cup in the center.
Use playdough or sand to shape a mountain around it.

Think of it as your very own Hawaiian island forming from the ocean.

2. Prepare the Lava

Add to the cup:

  • 1–2 spoonfuls of baking soda
  • A few drops of food coloring
  • A squirt of dish soap (optional)

3. Watch It Erupt!

Slowly pour vinegar into the top…

WHOOSH! Your volcano erupts!

The bubbly lava flows down just like real lava in Hawaii.

Make It Feel Like Hawaii

  • Add green paper or leaves for tropical plants
  • Place small rocks around your volcano
  • Play Hawaiian music while you build

What Children Learn

  • How volcanoes form islands
  • A simple science reaction (baking soda + vinegar)
  • Cultural appreciation and respect for nature

Parent Tip

In Hawaii, people treat volcanoes with respect because of their cultural meaning.
This is a great moment to talk with children about caring for the Earth and learning about different cultures.
