1. Chess began in India.
An early form of chess called Chaturanga was played in India around the 6th century. The game was based on different parts of an army and later developed into the chess we know today.
2. India’s national bird is the Indian peafowl.
The Indian peafowl, often called a peacock, is native to India and appears in art, stories and traditions. It was named India’s national bird in 1963.
3. Hinduism is the religion followed by the largest number of people in India.
Hinduism has ancient roots in South Asia and has been practiced for thousands of years. India is also home to many other religions, including Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Buddhism and Jainism.
4. India is famous for its huge movie industry.
Bollywood is the Hindi-language film industry based mainly in Mumbai. It is one part of India’s much larger film industry, which makes movies in many different languages every year.
5. Himachal Pradesh is often called the “Fruit Bowl of India.”
Himachal Pradesh is known for growing many fruits, especially apples. Orchards across the state also produce fruits such as cherries, apricots, plums and peaches.
